When you open a song from the library or a setlist, LiveSet displays it in full screen with a feature-rich interface.
At the top of the screen:
- On the left: go back to the library or the current setlist
- On the right: the button
allows you to edit the current song
- At the top right: the menu button (
on Android/web, or
on iOS) gives access to export as PDF, Preferences, or returning to the home screen
At the bottom of the screen, eight tools are available (some may be disabled depending on the song type or available data).
Volume control
Press the button to adjust the app volume, and enable/disable metronome sounds and chord playback.
When chord playback is enabled, simply tap a chord in the score to hear it played using the selected instrument (see below).
Note: chord playback is not available for PDF or image scores.
Metronome
The button activates a visual (and optionally audio) metronome displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Sound can be enabled/disabled in the volume settings.
LiveSet includes several metronome types, that can be selected from the Preferences page. The following choices are available:
- A flash on every pulse (on the top, the bottom, or the whole screen)
- An oscillating ball from left to right, like a traditional metronome (on the top or the bottom of the screen)
-
The beats based on the current time signature of the score, in a bar (on the top or the bottom of the screen):
This feature is only available if a tempo has been defined for the song (in general informations).
YouTube player
The button opens the YouTube player using the URL set in the song’s general information.
Navigation buttons allow you to play/pause and skip backward/forward by 5 seconds.
The locator button () lets you directly jump to saved positions in the song, if locators have been recorded in the title. Please refer to the documentation about YouTube synchronization for more information.
If screen size allows, the expand button displays the associated video thumbnail.
Note: an internet connection is required to playback YouTube videos.
Recorder
During rehearsals, it’s often useful to record short excerpts (e.g. to remember an ending, or a specific moment in the song). LiveSet allows you to record audio clips linked to each song.
To do so, press the button to open the recorder:
You’ll find record and playback controls. On first use, your device may request microphone access, which must be granted, otherwise LiveSet won't be able to record anything.
Recordings appear above the recorder, named by date and time:
Long press to rename a recording (confirm with the save icon).
To delete a recording, swipe it left. A confirmation message will be displayed.
The music palette
The button opens the music palette, combining an instrument view (keyboard or guitar) and the groove player.
- By pression the right button (
), you're activating the instrument view, to display chords on a piano keyboard, or on a guitar. Tap a chord to see how to play it. There are multiple voicing possibilities for a chord, but as of now, LiveSet only suggests one.
- The groove player allows you to listen to all or part of the current score with a basic arrangement, in a style of your choice — or even to create your own mini-arrangement using the groove editor. More information is available on the dedicated page.
To play the current score, simply press the button . It is also possible to start playback from a specific position by dragging and dropping the play button to that location.
To select a groove style, press the style selector and choose one from the list. Note that the displayed styles are only those compatible with the time signature of the current song. For example, there will likely be fewer options for a 7/8 song than for a 4/4. However, there will always be at least the "(Minimalistic)" style, automatically generated for any tempo and signature, that just plays the chords with a basic rhythm.
You can sort the proposed grooves by name, style or "fit". The fit is calculated based on the closeness of the current score with the kind of songs the groove was made for (taking into account its tempo, profile of chords etc.).
By choosing the "(custom)" style, you will open the groove editor, allowing you to compose you own style of arrangement.
Note: we regularly provide new groove styles for our premium users. If you have a BASIC or PRO plan, and if your device is connected to the internet, when you open the style selector, LiveSet will attempt to download the latest available styles.
The set of three switches for instruments allows you to enable or disable the sound of drums, bass, or other instruments respectively during playback.
Note: the grooves player and chord display via instruments are only available for standard LiveSet scores, not for scores imported as PDF or images.
Free drawing mode
By using the button , you open the free drawing palette, allowing you to annotate the current score freely. In this mode, you can use a stylus (or finger/mouse) to write, highlight, or add predefined symbols to the score — similar to marking up a paper sheet.
The palette is positioned by default at the bottom or on the right of the screen (depending on orientation). It can be moved to the opposite side (top or left) using the corresponding button (, respectively
).
The following tools are available:
-
disables drawing temporarily and re-enables zoom and navigation (dragging or using multi-touch / mouse wheel)
-
activates pencil mode, for writing or fine lines
-
activates highlighter mode, for semi-transparent highlighting
-
activates the eraser, to remove pencil or highlight strokes (or stamps when applicable)
-
activates stamp mode, allowing you to add symbols or more complex elements such as staff lines, guitar/bass tabs, or text. When stamp mode is activated, an additional palette appears.
Use the selector (top or left) to choose a category.
To add a stamp, drag it directly onto the score. Once placed, you can move or resize it using the handles around it.
For more complex stamps, such as staff lines, you can edit certain details by tapping on them, which opens an editing window:
Notes:
- Free drawing mode is only available when the song is not in edit mode
- It is also not compatible with the instrument view
- When exporting to PDF or LiveSet format, you can choose whether or not to include these annotations
Transposition
The button allows you to instantly transpose the chords of the current song to another key.
LiveSet lets you choose the target key (the original key is highlighted in orange). The major/minor mode cannot be changed, as it remains consistent with the song’s definition.
Depending on the selected key and mode, LiveSet automatically uses sharps or flats according to standard music theory (e.g., flats in F major, sharps in G major). However, you can force one or the other using the buttons at the top of the window.
By default, LiveSet also simplifies “uncomfortable” chords (e.g., avoiding B#, Cb, E#, or Fb). This behavior can be changed in Preferences to allow stricter theoretical notation when relevant.
The selected key remains saved for the current song, even if you open another song and return later.
If the song is opened within a setlist, the transposition is stored only for that setlist. This allows the same song to be used in different contexts with different keys.
If opened from the main library, the change affects all setlists that have not defined a specific transposition for that song.
Note: this feature is not available for PDF or image scores.
Prompter mode
The button allows you to activate prompter mode.
